I regaret to inform you that serious ri
have taken place directed against Japanese of whom there are some
2,200 in the Colony. In the course of their suppression Police and
Military were also attacked. 23rd September declared day o
humilistion in China as result of which there was some unauthoris i
flying of flage at half mast hera. On the area ng of 24th
September there was some anti Japanese deLonstration but the
Police had the situation in hand. On that morning I had instructed
Secretary for Chinese Affving to warn the local Chinese press
against Glamstory articles and to warn the Managers of places or
entertaiment that any attempts at full, asutory (ropaganda would
lead to their being closed. Sporadic rioting took place on the
24th September and 25th September but the Police had the siteat: n
well in hand. On the morning of 25th September everything
appeared quiet and the Police stated that they anticipated no
serious trouble. The situation however changed about 1 p.m. and
renewed attacks were made on Japanese shops. In view of this
after consultation with Inspector General of the Police I asked
the Military authorities to detail 50 men to stand by both in
the Island and Kowloon in case of emergency though it was not
considerad at that time that an emergency would arise more
especially in Kowloon .

there was an
unexpected and serious outbreak in Kowloon and a good deal of
damage being done and an isolated villa occupied by a Japanese
being attacked and 6 of its occupents murdereå . But for
